Here’s what to expect for a Florida armed security (Class G) license.
State fees: $164.75 total ($112 license + $42 fingerprint processing + $10.75 fingerprint retention). If you request a temporary license, the total is $179.75.
Training: Florida requires 28 hours of Class G firearms training. Schools typically charge $165–$300+. Expect extra costs for the range and ammunition—most courses use about 144–150 rounds—often $100–$200 depending on provider and ammo prices.

Can a Sarasota security services officer detain you in Florida?
Are armed Sarasota security services considered first responders?
Generally, no. “First responder” is a legal/public-safety designation that typically covers police, firefighters, and EMS. Armed security officers are private-sector professionals and aren’t granted the authority, protections, or benefits that come with first-responder status. On site, they may be the first to encounter an incident—deterring threats, reporting, stabilizing the scene, providing basic first aid, and coordinating with public safety—but they don’t replace law enforcement, fire, or EMS unless they are sworn officers serving in that capacity.
Do you need a security license in Florida?
If you’ll carry a firearm while on duty, you must also obtain a Class “G” statewide firearm license in addition to your Class D. The G license requires specific firearms training and authorization.
There are narrow exemptions—for example, unarmed “in-house” (proprietary) guards employed exclusively on their own employer’s premises, certain unarmed church security roles, and on-duty law-enforcement officers. Once a role involves carrying a firearm or working for a contract security agency, licensing applies.
What is a class G security?
